MPLS integrates IP routing with ATM switching to offer scalable IP-over-ATM networks. It lets routers at the edge of a network apply simple labels to packets or cells. ATM switches or existing routers in the network core can switch packets according to the labels with minimal lookup overhead.
1 Router alert label. This label is analogous to the use of the "router alert" option in IP packets. This label value is legal anywhere in the label stack except at the bottom. 2 IPv6 explicit null label. This label value is legal only at the bottom of the label stack. It indicates that the label stack must be popped and that the forwarding of the packet must then be based on the IPv6 header. 3 Implicit null label.
