If he couldn’t persuade Big Jim to move on it, then Big Jim had to go. Before long, on May 11, 1920, Colosimo was killed. No one knows if his spurned ex-wife/madam Victoria or Torrio ordered the hit. There was also a third possibility, focusing on political intrigue and rival Italian gangs looking to get a piece of the action, which Kenna and Colosimo had monopolized for so many years. No matter, the end result was an opening for Torrio, who exploited it to the fullest. He developed his own organization.

Having been successful both as a Black Hander and one who fought Black Hand crime, Torrio set to work, craftily, to eradicate the problem. He would agree to pay the demands only to turn on the extortionists. He killed some and scared off the others. Colosimo was relieved of a great burden. As the years went on, he spent more time in his café and left to Torrio, his number one assistant, the job of running his prostitution ring and other illegal businesses. Because Colosimo enjoyed so much success, he was slow to warm to the opportunities for growth that Prohibition presented.
