The significance of Fazio's theorizing and research in the context of the present chapter is that it shows that there are conditions under which reasonably strong attitude-behaviour relationships can be found even when one measures attitudes to the targets of behaviour, rather than attitudes to behaviour towards those targets. Thus the principle of compatibility as specified by Ajzen and Fishbein (1 977) can, in certain circumstances, be violated without fatally weakening the relationship between attitudinal and behavioural measures.
To measure the accessibility of an attitude, Fazio has used the time taken to respond to a question about that attitude. If an attitude is highly accessible, he argues, it should take less time for subjects to retrieve their evaluation of the object in question from memory, and they should therefore be quicker to answer questions about attitudes to that object. g. Fazio, Chen, McDonel, & Sherman, 1982); and (2) that such attitudes are more predictive of behaviour towards that object (a prediction for which there is also empirical support; see Fazio & Zanna, 198 1 , for a review).
The extended model includes a new explanatory construct, perceived behav ioural control, and research to date suggests that the addition of this construct generally does improve the prediction of intentions and behaviour, especially where the behaviour involved is one over which the individual has less than perfect control. Fazio's theorizing and research on the role played by direct behavioural experience with the attitude object, emphasizing the role played by the strength and accessibility of attitudes, demonstrates that there are conditions under which attitudes to targets can be predictive of behaviour towards those targets, without necessarily fulfilling the requirements of the principle of compatibility.
