The composition of cast iron varies significantly, depending upon the grade of pig iron, scrap used but in general it contains carbon in the range of about 2–4% by weight. The other alloying elements are manganese (Mn), phosphorus (P), sulfur (S) and high silicon concentrations, together with a much greater concentration of impurities than steels.
