PROLOGUE It Takes a Spark to Start a Prairie Fire I think what motivates people is not great hate, but great love for other people. — Huey Newton A Beginning All stories have beginnings. My story of the Common Ground Collective begins with questions of life and death. Not only my own, but also the lives and deaths of people I knew and loved, and of thousands I have never met, who lived in the Gulf Coast region in the fall of 2005. That was when, following an immense storm in the late summer, everyone and everything in the Gulf Coast region changed forever.

We thanked the two men for their help and left them at their warehouse. Returning to our hidden boat, we loaded it. The sun was warming the air as helicopters circled back and forth on missions unknown, passing close down to us, watching. The fires, unseen as we sat in our boat, still produced smoke across our landscape. We idled the boat into the middle of the waterway and killed the engine. We had to make a choice: turn one way to the bridge and eventually into the flooded city through the broken levees to further aid those disregarded by the state, or head the way we had come in to make the long journey back to where we had started.

Leadership (for lack of a better term) represents for me guidance by individuals or groups within communities. This guidance is based in the recognition that there are power relations even within horizontal organizing, based on social, cultural, experiential, or political factors. Individuals or groups in guidance roles may have more power (or be perceived to have more power). The practice of leadership seeks to subvert the familiar figure of the authoritarian leader who delegates tasks, makes unilateral decisions, and takes actions without discussion or accountability to those involved.
