The term for this technology is Advanced Ultra Supercritical (A-USSC). The European Union, China, India, and the United States, with large reserves of coal providing a major portion of the fuel used in those nations’ electric generating capacity, have committed and undertaken programs to solve the materials issues for this fuel. The program in the United States has been ongoing for over 10 years and is sponsored by the Department of Energy and the Ohio Coal Development Office, along with four steam generator vendors that shared costs.
This yields a lower cost, more efficient way of generating electricity. Limitations to the use of concentration are also outlined. Another aspect discussed is the current situation of solar thermal power generation. This approach has been in use for many years.
