Thanks to a Rockefeller Archive Center (RAC) travel grant and other financial support, I spent four weeks in North Tarrytown, New York, looking at MAP records from 1940 to 1956 that discuss its planning, inception, and programs; officers’ and trustees’ correspondence about Latin America during the late 1930s, oral histories taken during the 1960s from many of the MAP’s leading scientists; and the papers of Nelson Rockefeller, who developed a massive agricultural assistance program for Latin America while he was Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs during World War II.
