This principle is not, however, to be taken as applying to every possible understanding, but only to that understanding through whose pure apperception, in the representation 'I am', nothing manifold is given. An understanding which through its self-consciousness could supply to itself the manifold of intuition an understanding, that is to say, through whose representation the objects of the representation should at the same time exist - would not require, for the unity of in the consciousness of that representation; and they are thus composite.

In effect, the value of a system is for him as important as its coherence 42 Self and Knowledge or rationality. The value that lies behind any philosophical position - what it is trying to say about the fundamentals of the human condition - is the most basic issue in that philosophy. The effect of this, however, is to introduce a curious relativism to philosophical disputes: a position is not defended simply in terms of its rationality, but also in terms of the values it embodies. And how we consider the values that a system embodies is a personal matter: they are relative to the person who considers them.

It is clear that Kant is working hard to avoid any sense that the 'I think' is some kind of non-material entity magically controlling the shape of empirical reality.
