Rutherford provided a different interpretation, preferring to link the cleansing of the sanctuary to current events in Palestine, as well as to the internal disputes within the Watch Tower organization. He viewed it as a progressive process rather than an episodic event. The Holy Land, he argued, was the “soul” of God’s sanctuary and was in the process of restoration by the return of the Jews from 1918. The year 1918 also marked the beginning of Christ’s rule in heaven, which was followed by a cleansing that “began in earnest” in 1922.

Board members were formerly elected by shareholders, who became eligible to vote by purchasing shares at US$10 a share. C. T. Russell initially held the majority of shares and thus had control over both societies. Membership to the board was initially by co-option, with the shareholders merely voting the president, vice president, and secretary-treasurer into office from the wider board. J. F. Rutherford questioned the legality of this system, requiring all board members to be elected.

The Gospel of Matthew, it is believed, was originally written in Hebrew, but only the Greek text remains available.
