A very few of their priests have been Caucasian. Only a quarter have been Nisei. It was up to lay Nisei leaders to organize Sunday schools for Sansei (third-generation) youth. The Canadian-born (Nisei and Sansei) membership of the churches is upwardly mobile and tends to lack ethnic consciousness. Intermarriage rates among Sansei range from  percent in the rural west to  percent in Montreal.

Jay Dolan observes, “The post-Vatican II era has rightly been called the age of the emerging laity, but history reminds us quite clearly that, even in the brief past of Catholic America, lay people at one time had a major responsibility for the growth and development of the local church” (Dolan , ; see also Smith ).
