1. During wet cycles salinities are usually between 10 and 25%0,but in drought periods may reach 102%0(Day 1981). The St Lucia system, which consists of three interconnected lakes draining to the sea through a 21 km-long narrow estuary, is at sea level and receives the inflow of four rivers with a catchment of 9000 km2(Fig. 1). Most rain falls in the summer in the coastal area and the inland region is dry in winter. St Lucia’s surface area fluctuates between 420 and 215km2 and has a mean depth of less than 1m.
Turbidities are usually high, partly through river discharge and partly due to wind induced turbulence that keeps fine sediment in circulation and stirs up the muddy substratum. The coastal waters west of Mobile Bay are affected by the outflow of the Mississippi river which, apart from reducing salinities, dumps between one and two million tons of sediment a day. Along the west coast of Florida there are a number of estuarine bays of which Tampa Bay (27"40'N, 84"SO'W) is the largest and one of the best studied (Killam et al.
The southern zone in general shows a lower salinity range during the year 32 Tropical Estuarine Fishes and seems to be least affected by seawater and freshwater incursions. The opening of the Palur canal to the sea in 1964 coupled with lesser river discharge in 1965 appears to have led to comparatively higher salinities in the southern zone. The river discharge into the lake is mainly influenced by hinterland rainfall rather than by coastal rainfall (Sarkar 1979). Pulicat Lake of 280 km2 is also only about 2 m deep, is connected to the sea by a single channel and has a similar salinity regime.
