Dying with Dignity: Will Canadians be able to choose?
The question of whether Canadians should have access to medically-assisted dying has been answered decisively and affirmatively by the Royal Society of Canada, by a commission of the National Assembly in Quebec and in the Carter case decision by the Supreme Court of British Columbia. But the BC case has been appealed by the Federal Government.
This complex and emotional topic will be presented by three speakers focusing on palliative care, the law that applies to assisted suicide and the need for all Canadians to have the choice of medically assisted dying. The presentations will be followed by an open and frank audience discussion.
Speakers:
John Warren is Vice President of Dying With Dignity, a national member-based charity committed to helping people achieve quality in dying. The organization helps people understand their end-of-life choices and works for end of choice dying for all Canadians
Brenda Ireland practiced family medicine at Haig Clinic, Lethbridge. She has been a member of the local palliative care team since 2000 and was a program physician at the geriatric hospital for seven years. Dr. Ireland is a clinical associate at the Jack Ady Cancer Centre. End-of-life care is her primary focus.
Berga Moen, LL.B. was first called to the Bar in 1995 and has been a practicing solicitor in Lethbridge since 2003. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Southern Alberta Community Living Association.
